Top Five Stinkin’ Awesome Highlghts of the Epic Escape 22 Retreat by Chris Cox
Looking back on the Escape Retreat that took place a few weeks ago, it is fun to remember its highlights. There were definitely memories made that weekend! Funny ones, real ones, hard ones, lasting ones. If I were to recap on the top five “stinkin’ awesome” highlights of the Escape 22 retreat in Fall 2011, I would do that with the following:
5--The games at the retreat--definitely EPIC! Remember glow in the dark capture the flag?? Or how about the picture scavenger hunt??? People faking each other out so that other groups wouldn’t accomplish the task? All in all, the games were bamtastic, as Joel would say!
4--Of course you can’t have an amazing retreat, without amazing FOOD! Who says cereal has to be eaten in the morning??? The Sams Club sized bags of cereal brought smiles to everyone’s faces and man did we endulge! And did I just hear someone ask “you want a cookie?” Pretty sure the average number of chocolate chip cookies enhaled by one person was 6...and that’s being modest!
3--I love that on retreats you get to just experience awesome community! The Nevada group went on a walk looking for the three crosses and it turned out to be an exploration/adventure trip. We definitely felt like Christopher Columbus. We boldly went where no man had gone before--well not really...and that wasn’t Columbus, it was that Picard Guy. But in all seriousness--it was so fun to just be out there as a group watching God answer prayer. I prayed that He would bring the Nevada group together and it was awesome to see Him answer that!
2--Saturday night of the retreat, I was praying that God would move in hearts. That He would wreck people of their sin and that people would just be moved...Little did I know that my heart would be the one moved that night...As we worshipped together, we started with David Crowder’s “O How He Loves Us” and I experienced God’s love that night in a pretty real way! I was just reminded of my sin and how much He loves me and as we sang the line “and my heart turns violently inside my chest,” I felt that! I don’t remember the last time I was moved to tears, but it happened on Saturday night. So much so, that I couldn’t continue singing...I just worshipped in my tears.
1--During the message, Claude spoke on missions and discussed how missionaries in the past started with movements of youth, “put your yes on the table.” On Saturday night, Claude challenged us to stand up if our “yes” was on the table and we were ready to say “God, whatever you want us to do and where ever you want us to go--we’re here and we’re available!” It was pretty incredible to see the response!
